Credit Cards and Budgeting – Making Credit Cards Work For You
Do credit cards and budgeting really go hand in hand? Chances are good that they do, and you will need to take steps to make sure that credit cards and budgeting go hand in hand in your life as well. One of the biggest mistakes that people make when they’re trying to get their credit histories under control is that they don’t see credit as a budgeting and finance tool. In other words, people usually go out and blow all the money that they’ve been given on their credit cards without really thinking about the long term effects of doing this.
Does it really have to be that way? Absolutely not! It’s quite possible to pick up a great deal of power with credit cards, but with power comes responsibility. You can make credit cards really work for you, as long as you’re willing to get creative.
What you need to do first is think about the purpose that you have in mind when it comes to credit cards. For example, if you do a lot of traveling, your credit cards should be reserved solely for making your travel easier. It’s very easy to book trips with credit cards and reserve your spot, only to pay cash at a later date. On the other hand, if you plan on using credit cards for true emergencies then you will need to stick to using it just for emergencies. Emergencies include car breakdowns or a bill that has to be paid right away when you don’t have the money to cover it otherwise — fashion sales do not count as emergencies, sad to say.
It also goes without saying that you will need some help to make sure that credit cards are being used in your household wisely. You can pick up accounting software designed for this purpose, or you can just set up your own spreadsheets in office spreadsheet software like Microsoft Office Excel. It’s completely up to you — choose what you’re most comfortable with.
Some credit cards even have built in budgeting features, such as cutting off your expenses after a certain amount has been reached. These are usually the newer credit cards, as many credit card companies have realized that people need some help using credit cards wisely. Still, even if your credit card doesn’t have this feature, you will need to control your spending at all times — it’s your financial future on the line!
